An apartment complex in the 600 block of 6th Avenue was evacuated early Friday morning after a fleeing burglary suspect scrambled onto its roof, officials said.

The incident started about 6:08 a.m. near the area of 5th and Sunset avenues when Los Angeles Police Department officers established a perimeter looking for a burglary suspect, said Officer Sara Faden, a police spokeswoman.

The suspect made his way onto the roof of a three-story apartment complex and it was evacuated, Faden said.

The LAPD’s SWAT team was called in and they helped negotiate the suspect’s surrender about 9:30 a.m., Faden said.

“He did come down on his own, there was no use of force,” she said.

KTLA-Channel 5 and FOX-Channel 11 showed the shirtless man pacing on the roof.

Police and television news helicopters circled loudly overhead during the early morning incident that started with the cry of rushing sirens.
