The seventh annual Venice community potluck picnic and barbecue will be held Saturday at Oakwood Park.

The free, annual barbecue is being sponsored by the Venice Neighborhood Council and will feature music, games and food for the entire family.

Picnic organizers will provide chicken, burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork and veggie options served by firefighters from Los Angeles Fire Department Station No. 63 based in Venice, retired Captain Jeremiah Johnson and master grillers Barklie Griggs and Todd von Hoffmann.

Newly elected Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin and other elected officials were scheduled to join.

The musical acts will include blues and funk bands with the legendary Bonedaddys headlining and bringing their fun, grooving worldbeat tunes for picnickers.

Anyone who brings a side dish, salad or dessert will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses.

The games will include a watermelon-eating contest, a rope pull and a bouncy house.

The event is free and open to all.

The summer picnic and community gathering has been an annual event since the 2006 shooting death of Augustin Contreras, 17, who was killed by a gang member at Venice High School as he tried to protect his younger brother.

Residents decided to create a social event after the tragic slaying to strengthen Venice community bonds.

The picnic and barbecue will be held Saturday, August 3, from noon to 4 p.m. at Oakwood Park, 767 California Ave.
