Oakwood Rec Center Teen Club Holds Gift Wrapping Fundraiser on Saturday
The Teen Club at Oakwood Recreation Center will wrap Christmas presents during a fundraiser this Saturday to help send eight club members to Washington, D.C.
The fundraiser will take place at the Oakwood Recreation Center (map) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to send the teens in April to the nation’s capitol. All donations for the gift wrapping will go toward the trip.
An online fundraiser also has been started with a goal of raising $16,000.
The funds would pay for a four-day trip to Washington D.C., including hosting by Explore America Touring Company, hotel accommodations, airfare, meals and trips to national monuments.
The teens will be accompanied by three full-time volunteer chaperones.
The cost is $1,594 per student and each family has been asked to contribute at least $200 to the trip.
The eight teens chosen for the trip ranked the highest in points earned for daily attendance and participation in Teen Club events, as well as gamesmanship during dodgeball games.
Several of the teens wrote essays explaining why they would like to go to Washington.
‘I would like to have the experience of traveling in a plane. I would also like to go out of state,’ wrote Karizma Brown.
Brittney Bullins and Karizma both said they would visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and Asiah Castile listed the White House as a must-see followed by the United States Botanic Garden.
The gift wrapping fundraiser will take place Saturday in the annex of the Oakwood Recreation Center, 767 California Ave.
