Oakwood Rec Center Teen Club Holds Gift Wrapping Fundraiser on Saturday...

The Teen Club at Oakwood Recreation Center will wrap Christmas presents during a fundraiser this Saturday to help send eight club members to Washington, D.C. The fundraiser will take place at the Oakwood Recreation Center (map) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to send the teens in April to the nation’s capitol. All donations for the gift wrapping will go toward the trip. An online fundraiser also has been started with a goal of raising $16,000. The funds would pay for a four-day trip to Washington D.C., including hosting by Explore America Touring Company, hotel accommodations, airfare, meals and trips to national monuments. Meeting Friday (3/15) at Venice High On Proposed 6th-12th Program on Campus...

A public meeting will be held Friday (3/15) at the Venice High School cafeteria to present information and field questions about a pilot school designed for 6th- to 12th-graders sharing space on the campus. The meeting will be held at 3:20 p.m. and will include officials from the Los Angeles Unified School District, recently re-elected LAUSD school board member Steve Zimmer and principal Elsa Mendoza. The school board is expected to vote Tuesday on The Incubator School pilot program that will start next fall on a Westside campus with 6th- and 7th-graders. Supporters of the program have said it likely will be located on the Venice High School campus, but the site remains under negotiation and may change....

Kimberly Woodruff, 17, a senior at Culver City High School, was given the club’s top honor during the ceremony. Woodruff has been a member of the club for seven years and was a finalist last year for the award. She is a co-founder of The Girls PACT, a weekly discussion and information-sharing group for high school girls that originally started out as a campaign against teenage pregnancy. The Venice office of tech giant Google will host a ceremony Feb. 21 honoring the 2013 “Youth of the Year” of the Boys & Girls Club of Venice, the club said Tuesday in a statement.
