Venice park shooting survivor identifies reputed gang member gunman at trial...

By Paul Chavez Venice Dispatch A former Venice High School student who survived a June 2011 shooting at Penmar Park confirmed the identity of the reputed gang member gunman Tuesday during testimony in the double-homicide trial. Christian Hernandez, 21, testified at Los Angeles Airport Courthouse against Michael Anthony Mariscal, 22, who has been charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstances of multiple murder and to benefit a gang. Prosecutors allege that Mariscal on June 22, 2011, about 4 p.m. fired on a group of teens sitting in bleachers waiting to play basketball, killing Venice High School sophomore Alan Mateo and Venice Skills Center sophomore Salvador Diaz Jr., both 18. LAPD Pacific Division to host open house and pancake breakfast Sept. 20...

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Division will host an open house and pancake breakfast on September 20 at the station. Proceeds from the $5 per person pancake breakfast will benefit the non-profit Pacific Area Boosters Association that supports the division’s youth programs and the police station. The free open house will include guided tours of the station, games, raffles and a review of the progress made on the new community center. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to noon. The community event will be held at LAPD Pacific Station, 12312 Culver Boulevard. The LAPD’s Pacific Division serves the Venice area as well as Mar Vista, Playa del Rey, Del Rey, Palms and Westchester.      ...

Bret Haller, founder and curator of Yo! Venice, dies at 45...

By Paul Chavez Venice Dispatch Bret Haller, the co-founder and longtime curator of the popular online community forum Yo! Venice, has died. He was 45. Haller died April 9 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a nearly year-long battle against pancreatic cancer, said his brother Eric in a recent interview. A memorial paddle out has been planned for Tuesday to honor Haller with participants asked to gather at 6 p.m. on Windward Plaza by the skate park. Haller’s death was announced by his family on Yo! Temporary Ice Rink Planned for Venice Beach Over Winter Holidays...

Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin during a public meeting last week introduced plans for a temporary ice skating rink this winter on Venice Beach. Bonin during a March 18 visit to the Venice Neighborhood Council board meeting said more needed to be done to create a family-friendly environment in Venice Beach. He pointed to city success stories at MacArthur Park and Pershing Square as examples of positive programming that turned formerly rundown areas into family-friendly environments. Candidates Mixer Thursday for Upcoming Venice Neighborhood Council Election...

A candidate recruitment drive will be held Thursday at James Beach restaurant for the upcoming Venice Neighborhood Council election. The mixer will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 60 N. Venice Blvd. for all prospective candidates and anyone wishing to learn more about the local advisory councils that were created during the Los Angeles charter reform movement of the late 1990s. All of the seats on the Venice Neighborhood Council seat are up in the election, including the president and vice-president positions as well as the chair of the influential Land Use and Planning Committee.
