Temporary Ice Rink Planned for Venice Beach Over Winter Holidays...

Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin during a public meeting last week introduced plans for a temporary ice skating rink this winter on Venice Beach. Bonin during a March 18 visit to the Venice Neighborhood Council board meeting said more needed to be done to create a family-friendly environment in Venice Beach. He pointed to city success stories at MacArthur Park and Pershing Square as examples of positive programming that turned formerly rundown areas into family-friendly environments. Oakwood Rec Center Teen Club Holds Gift Wrapping Fundraiser on Saturday...

The Teen Club at Oakwood Recreation Center will wrap Christmas presents during a fundraiser this Saturday to help send eight club members to Washington, D.C. The fundraiser will take place at the Oakwood Recreation Center (map) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to send the teens in April to the nation’s capitol. All donations for the gift wrapping will go toward the trip. An online fundraiser also has been started with a goal of raising $16,000. The funds would pay for a four-day trip to Washington D.C., including hosting by Explore America Touring Company, hotel accommodations, airfare, meals and trips to national monuments. Venice Sign Turning Red, White and Blue on Wednesday for Patriotic Birthday Celebration...

The world famous Venice sign hanging over Windward Avenue will be turned red-white-and-blue Wednesday night in a patriotic celebration of Venice’s 108th birthday. The sign will be turned on at 8 p.m. during a lighting ceremony and several local bars and restaurants will be celebrating with a birthday crawl featuring birthday cake, sing-alongs and drink specials. YAS Fitness Center at 7:15 p.m. will offer a workout and cake and The Townhouse will serve a free shot of bourbon at 7:45 p.m. for those in the bar to celebrate. Great Venice Toy Drive Underway Until Dec. 6...

The second Great Venice Toy Drive will feature a give-away with real snow and presents for local children. The holiday event sponsored by the Venice Neighborhood Council started Monday with a toy collection drive that will last through Dec. 6 and culminate with a toy give-away Dec. 8 at Oakwood Recreation Center.
